Watched Hong Kong's 2009 Bodyguards and Assassins (2:18:13), about an attempt, in 1906, to protect Chinese statesman, physician, and political philosopher Sun Yat-Sen from an assassination plot. Among the cast members is Donnie Yen in an atypical role, a far cry from his Ip Man series.
This movie is really about the beginnings of the revolution against the Qing Dynasty and the sacrifices many rebels made in the name of democracy. It has great fight scenes. Most of the death scenes are amazing--they are portrayed in a detached and dispassionate manner. Indeed, I found even the shots and the editing to be very un-Chinese. The movie could very well have been conceived and directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
