In Metro Manila, candy in a sealed bottle, a glass of drinking water covered with cling wrap, a tea light in a lantern, and joss sticks in an incense burner are sufficient offerings to wandering spirits during Hungry Ghosts Month. Place them at your gate or front door, beyond the reach of thieves.

On the first night (August 8), on Ghost Festival Night (August 22), and on the last night (September 6), light nine joss sticks. Light only one joss stick on all other nights. These are acts of compassion, for it is said that the wandering spirits are those of persons who died alone and had no relatives when they were living.

It is also acceptable to place your favorite deck of Tarot cards, oracle set, or crystal ball on the offering table to obtain the blessings of the spirits. Again, beyond the reach of thieves.
