I spent every summer of my boyhood and youth in our ancestral house in San Fernando, Pampanga. Every year, during that time, an annual carnival was set up on the grounds of the Pampanga High School, which had the most massive grandstand made entirely of wood. Our house was a few meters away from the back of the grandstand. At night I would drift off to sleep with the sounds of the carnival floating through the tall windows. This is the music the main tent always played:

The music haunts me to this very day, and I will forever associate it with my summer nights. Years later, of course, I would write the musical Tolda for Ateneo Children's Theatre.
