All throughout Hungry Ghosts Month you will see faces formed by shadows, cracks in walls, stains on the ceiling, shapes coming into being by the random juxtaposition of objects, even sudden appearances on the barks of trees. Sometimes the inexplicable will happen: a small puddle of water on the floor, pangs of hunger even after you've eaten a substantial meal, a whiff of unidentifiable cologne coming from nowhere, inanimate objects seemingly moving.

"Hungry Ghosts" express their hunger and their thirst in many ways. It doesn't cost much to light a candle in a safe, glass vessel and set food and drinking water in sealed containers at your gate, entrance, or front door for them when they pass by at night. Or offer prayers and flowers. These have nothing to do with religion. They are mere gestures of compassion, of extending care to others. The way you would to needy human beings.
