Watched all three episodes of the U.S.A.'s 2022 I Just Killed My Dad, about 17-year-old Anthony Joseph Templet, who shot his father in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 2019. The documentary includes interviews with the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney of Baton Rouge, Anthony's defense lawyer Jarrett Ambeau, Anthony's grandmother, mother, stepmother, and brother, a clinical and forensic psychologist, a police sergeant, an investigator, and a reporter.
The crucial question in the beginning is whether or not to charge Anthony with murder, for which he would be in prison for life. The documentary then proceeds to unravel Anthony's father's history, his relationship with Anthony, and his relationship with his wives, family, and coworkers.
We are made to pause and reflect on family dysfunctions and how modern living calls forth the Shadow within us. Yet, this documentary is also about compassion--how those who genuinely care extend their compassion to us and how it eventually enables us to be compassionate to ourselves.
A must-watch in a world besieged with depressing current events.
