Watched Malaysia's 2023 Hungry Ghost Diner (1:55:21). Bonnie owns and operates a food truck in the city. She is estranged from her father, who runs a coffee shop with Bonnie's uncle, Ah Kiu, in Behrang Station, New Village.
It is the Month of Hungry Ghosts. Ah Kiu pays a short visit to Bonnie and then mysteriously disappears. Bonnie then decides to go to Behrang Station, where she learns that her father is deep in debt and is about to close down his coffee shop. Her father also informs her that Ah Kiu has passed away.
The movie switches from reality to the otherworldly. with a lot of creative camera work, as Bonnie explores the ghostly realm, meets her deceased grandparents, mother, uncle, and aunt and discovers that her deceased mother has become a hungry ghost. In the end, however, Bonnie is reunited with her father, which endows her mother's ghost with healing.
This is not a spectacular movie, but it showcases the many celebrations of Hungry Ghosts Month in Malaysia. The scenes are interspersed with puppet shows, dances, and theatrical performances all related to Hungry Ghosts Month. The time span encompasses the entire month, and the special message is that all unfinished business must be wrapped up before the Hungry Ghosts Festival.
