Automatic writing is pretty much like the Ouija board--when done without a knowledgeable mentor it is seldom connected to spirits and almost always connected to your Personal Unconscious and the Collective Unconscious. The voice that most frequently emerges is the voice of your Shadow, which embodies your anxieties, fears, and personal doubts.

I ask students to do this exercise only after conducting three, specially designed, depth exercises. During the subsequent session on automatic writing I ensure that I am physically there to guide them.
