Physical distancing refers to the proximity between inanimate or non-moving objects, such as between lamp posts or between cars in a parking lot.

Social distancing refers to the proximity between beings, human or animal, that move, communicate, become restless because of emotion, extend their limbs, flick their hair and sweat, and project breath, gas, saliva, and germs.
