It's actually discomforting reading a 2007 postmodern novel a la Paul Auster in 2021. One realizes all too clearly that the straightforward works of Wilkie Collins, Edith Pargeter, and Agatha Christie are much more enjoyable and have true psychological depth rather than a menu of dysfunctions. And no multiple occurrences of those English words "fuck" and "shit", which seem to make modern novels publishable and saleable for some reason.
