Jerwin flew to the Philippines all the way from Helsinki to stay a month following the untimely demise of his mother.

We scheduled lunch and the 22nd Bilbo Baggins afternoon with some of the Wandkeepers. Allan claimed my framed, Santissima Trinidad taladro, and the company took some pages off my art student portfolios from the time I was under the tutelage of Fernando B. Sena of the Saturday Art Group in 2004.

Our key cabinet laden with all of our house keys, including keys to fire exits. Yes, it's another Papemelroti export overrun, and I bought it some 30 years ago.

I used to collect key chains but recently retained only those that I really like.

The small door to the r4ight is to our broom closet, which is located underneath the wooden staircase.

The third great thing is that I can ask the cafe staff to cook anything for me.

I bought them from antique dealer Lina Cristobal when she still had a shop in Ermita, before I retired from the U.S. Embassy in 2015.

Neil affixed one with brass screws on the secret door that leads to M.'s cafe.

Fiber artist Lilo Gutierrez had these bales of white, polyeste4r fiberfill picked up from our house. I ordered them from Divisoria many years ago, long after a course in crocheting stuffed toys at Familia House in the old Farmers Market. I intended to use them for making Voodoo dolls but eventually lost interest in doing so.

21st Bilbo Baggins afternoon

Henson picked up the Spirit Questors' huge, vinyl canvas hand-painted with a magic circle in a square, for their group. The Questors used it for high magic and low magic rituals, and for creating a protective space for special Quests. The entire piece covered half of a barangay basketball court while it was being painted, and is completely washable with soap and water. We had to drape part of it over Henson's car to photograph it.  

Ancestral spirits and spirit guides like perfume. If you are obsessed with perfume, it could be because your spirit guides are very close to you.

Spray your altar with perfume from time to time, and keep a bottle on it rather than on your dresser.

Third intensely hot day in Cubao. You could fry eggs on our rooftops.

Our high-relief wall sculpture of Our Lady of Guadalupe seen through the archway between the living and dining areas. The entire piece is approximately eight feet tall and carved out of one slab of solid wood. Like some of our stuff, I bought this off Ermita years ago, before I retired from the U.S. Embassy. The crown and scepter were later, antique finds at Cubao Shoe Expo. I had our jeweler encrust them with faux white sapphires.

This is an atypical rendition because it has God the Father, the Holy Spirit represented by a dove, and eight cherubs. God the Father's right hand is detachable (tita y poni). We did not varnish the wood in any way. It just aged and darkened.

Though this looks like a trophy room for now, I plan to convert the space to a one-car garage with a security door. I don't drive, but my granddaughters do, and I know that one of them will buy a car in the future. I would rather leave them a functional and well-appointed garage than a trophy room after I die.

On the left, our writing desk with a Design Toscano tellurion. The wooden cabinets are antique; the one on our left is our kumanthong cabinet or shrine, the one on the right houses art books. M. livened up a corner with two lamps.

On the Mobel Systema coffee table are four, aromatherapy lamps representing the four doors of the apartments we live in. (We live in three and D. rents the fourth.) How I miss Mobel Systema!

As you can see from all previous Cover Photos, every area (living, dining, prep and cooking, breakfast, and foyer) have seating and coffee tables or game tables--a perfect setting to host high tea for Spirit Questors, after which they can read oracles for each other or simply break into small groups and engage in pockets of conversation. 

I'm inviting 14 Spirit Questors a la Agatha Christie, hopefully minus a murder. I'm not going to lace the cake and pastries and doughnuts and tea and coffee with poison anyway. Mercury Drug doesn't sell arsenic, after all. Joke!

Our living area with the ceiling lights off and the lamps and lanterns on, view from the west side. I am obsessed with lights and the changes they create in every space.

In the background, our dining area and the Chinese lanterns therein can be seen one level below (the living area is raised two feet from the original floor, making everything an open-layout, multi-level space). In the far background is the foyer with our writing table, and beyond that, not visible because the glass doors are shut, the small loggia leading onto the driveway.

The stepped wall with crystal balls, painted blush, has a wooden staircase behind it that leads to the upper floor, where my granddaughters' bedrooms are located.

We left our family altar and columbary, actually an antique komoda with a white, marble slab top, where it used to be. All of my four sisters and I pitched in to buy it when I was still working at the U.S. Embassy. A Venetian-type mirror behind it functions as a portal for the spirits of ancestors to come through.

An antique, narra cabinet to the left houses ancient clay treasures from a private excavation. Farther left, my framed, oil pastel portrait of my younger son Chito; below it, my portrait in oil by Rafael del Casal. The neoclassical lamp was a purchase from Mike Prado's shop from the time he still had Blue Bacon and Green Eggs.

Above the sofa on the left hang seven lanterns with gold-plated frames, containing tea lights.

Today is the Qing Ming Festival.

This is the day to clean your family altars, ancestral tables, columbaries, mausoleums, tombs, and gravesites.
