Old

Watched M. Night Shyamalan's 2021 movie Old (1:47:48). Families check into Anamika Resort, a .high-end, tropical paradise. Some of them are secretly invited to the resort's private beach off a nature preserve--and are consequently trapped there. Strange things begin to happen, among them everyone's rapid aging.

The movie's first major flaw is its sophomoric screenplay. We are not given time to sympathize with the characters before they start dying, and, when they do die, they remain the one-dimensional sketches they started out as. The dialogue is stilted, peppered with unlikely phrases, and ends up being hilarious, like a Bollywood script that decided to try and go serious without everyone's permission. The overall situation the characters are thrust into comes across as material for a cheap, group dynamics exercise. The usual, O. Henry twist at the end has become tired and predictable by now, and the entire movie becomes a mere, Halloween feature.

Its second major flaw is in casting. The performers are unable to portray their scenes with truth and with the right facial expressions, which is probably why many of the intimate scenes are under-lighted or defocused. The accents are perplexing, especially with East Indians on vacation--from where?--because they seem to be talking like New Yorkers.

Perhaps the third major flaw is the director himself, He is already notorious for making movies based on "ideas" snatched from here and there, rather than on three-dimensional characters. As such, his oeuvre never stands with a strong, philosophical spine. Old, in particular, screens like a short story instead of a novel of a movie.

The best thing that might be said about this movie is that it took the risk of hiring actors who don't look like stars and who will never be stars. It's what Hollywood has been needing for the longest time.

Good night, Cubao!

"Hi Tony. Congratulations on your recent exhibit! I'm sorry to bother you with this but lately, I've been smelling acrid odors such as intense incense smoke at work and something like an electric fire at home. I have checked my surroundings and nothing seems to have caused them. I've read on phantosmia and now I'm wondering if this may have an underlying medical cause although I haven't been sick other than the seasonal allergies. I haven't experienced anything like this before either. Thank you for your time."

Haunted

Watched all six episodes of the U.S.A.'s Haunted  (2018). Every episode is narrated by the actual person with first-hand experience (2013).

Episode 1 ("In the Pines") is narrated by Hannah, who moves in with her boyfriend, in a remote cabin in the woods. They discover a false wall that covers a torture chamber. Its original owner apparently used to take women there to "feed the house" with blood and kill them.

Episode 2 ("Haunted by Henry") is narrated by Wyatt, whose family moves into a house formerly owned by mining king Henry Croft in British Colombia. Croft's spirit continues to live in the house, smoking cigars and sitting in a rocking chair. He is, however, hostile toward the new tenants. Wyatt does research and discovers that the house's previous tenant must have also been haunted and eventually committed suicide.

In Episode 3 ("Gift of Evil"), Emily is attacked by a spirit that resides in an old music box. She takes the box to a medium, who sees that the music box and the locket within were owned by a girl who was murdered by two men and thrown in the river.

Brandy narrates the events in Episode 4 ("The Witch Behind the Wall"). When her mother can finally afford to rent a house, they end up in one whose adjoining residence belongs to a witch. The witch build a dollhouse with dolls corresponding to Emily's family members, and performs hexing rituals to drive them away.

In Episode 5 ("Demon Cat"), young Alicia and her family move from a mobile home into a house in Garden Grove, California. A demon cat violently attacks the family members, especially Alicia, who develops typhoid fever and is hospitalized. A shamanic practitioner is called in to perform a cleansing ritual on the house.

Half-Mexican Christian tells of how, in the final episode ("Sins of the Father"), his father and he are, one after the other, diabolically possessed in Oregon and undergo destructive fugues..

The episodes are scary in that they involve people getting seriously hurt and dying. Most of the scenes, of course, could have been exaggerated for cinematic purposes, such as the appearance of monsters, persons levitating, and even a python emerging from a protagonist's mouth. In the end, one questions how and why the series must manage to be more frightening than horror movies.

Very entertaining, but a strain on one's suspension of disbelief.

Haunted Latinoamerica:

Watched all five episodes of the USA's reality TV show Haunted: Latin America (2021). Each episode is narrated by a protagonist surrounded by relatives and friends in a living room. The stories are set mostly in Mexico and in Colombia, and occur between 2004 and 2018.

In the first episode ("The House of the Damned"), housewife Brisa Ramirez fights to own a house after her divorce, only to find out that it is haunted by the ghosts of two abusive men and an abused child. In the second episode ("The Cursed Doll"), single mother Zully Daza is obsessed with a ballerina doll that is possessed by a male spirit that is in love with her and is out to kill her. Episode 3, titled "The Woman from El Molino," recounts the experiences of police NCO and criminology student Rodrigo Casas, who is rescued more than once by a female spirit that he recognizes from a legendary story. Episode 4, titled "Something Knocking at the Door," is about student Diego Ruiz, who is followed by rapping sounds wherever he goes--and who always has a neighbor who dies. In the final episode ("The Devil Dances Before Easter"), young Emmanuel Cifuentes is sent to live with his grandmother, a gypsy, after his parents are divorced. Despite being warned by his grandmother not to leave the house on Good Friday, he does so, and is subsequently hounded by a big, black dog and a devil. He grows up and asks his grandmother to train him as a spiritualist.

The settings and situations will remind viewers of those in the Philippines. A variety of experts are consulted by the narrators: researchers, a parapsychologist, native healers, a priest, and a pastor. Each episode is open-ended, which could be disturbing to audiences accustomed to closure.

All episodes are well-performed, but there are too many lit candles in the narration sequences, and almost all of the scenes are under-lighted.

There is some semi-nudity.

Good night, Cubao!

_Lockwood & Co._ Season 1: Review

Watched all eight episodes of the U.K.'s Lockwood & Co. (2023), about young ghost hunters in an indeterminate time period (there are no cell phones and no Internet) set in London. The country is beset with The Problem, an epidemic of ghosts whose touch bring death, and only psychic young people and children have the ability to fight them. Several agencies, supervised by adults, are tasked to conduct training on talented, young students, who must pass Fourth Grade in order to be considered professionals. These agencies are overseen and monitored by the DEPRAC (Department of Psychical Research and Control). The protagonists in the series are Lucy Carlyle, Anthony Lockwood, and George Casper Karim, who work as an independent and unlicensed team.

The series is in English but features English subtitles, which is just as well not only because the cast tends to mumble their dialogue but also because the script employs untypical terms taken from the novels authored by Jonathan Stroud, such as sensitives instead of psychics, listeners instead of audients, Type One, Type Two, and Type Three Ghosts; visitors, changers, wraith hunters, relic men, cold maidens, agents, death glows, and ghost-locking, to name several. The last series that attempted this, as far as I know, was Grimm and its Wesens, woging, hexenbiests, and zauberbiests

The problem with the concept and script of the series is that they work too much off the Harry Potter template. If you look closely enough, Anthony Lockwood is Harry Potter, Lucy Carlyle is Hermione Granger, George Karim is Ron Weasley, Quill Kipps is Draco Malfoy, and DEPRAC is the Ministry of Magic. The depiction of young psychics seeking to escape from an abusive family has become old hat by now--so is the predictable insertion of a ball sequence to show the protagonists in glamorous attire. The cheap exposition technique of culprits confessing their motives and movements to protagonists, really to the audience, is employed more than once. And the use of iron, silver, and sand, filings, chains, rapiers, silver nets, and incendiaries also seem both unlikely and inconvenient.

Yes, despite all of the special effects and AI, we are all still waiting for writers to step out of the 20th century and enter the 21st, and it is already 2023.

Strangely, the saving grace of this series is the laid-back, self-effacing, but intense performance of Cameron Chapman as Anthony Lockwood. He makes no effort to shine, but he dazzles. There is the danger, though,  of his getting stuck with the same predicament that Tyler Posey was in with Teen Wolf, He should be given non-supernatural roles from time to time.

Good night, Cubao!

Till the End of the Moon: Review

Watched all 40 episodes of China's Till the End of the Moon (2023). The Devil King threatens to destroy the Four Continents and Three Realms and all living beings within. Li Susu, the daughter of an Immortal, volunteers to travel to the past, retrieve the evil bone from the Devil King's body, and then kill him. She practices The Loveless Way on her path toward becoming a goddess, and is confident that she will succeed in her mission--until she develops feelings that conflict with her cultivation.

The story takes the viewers not only through the past, the present, and the future but also through at least three parallel existences in which the characters play a variety of roles and engage in a variety of relationships. The overall design of the series is polished, and the costumes, magnificent--they are not recycled from previous productions. Due to the expertise of everyone in the make-up and lighting departments, Luo Yun Xi, Bai Lu, and even Sun Zhen Ni are at the height of their beauty in every episode.

One can sense that the creators and crew are in love with Luo Yun Xi and are developing him as China's Keanu Reeves, but Bai Lu manages to outshine him with her masterful acting. She demonstrates that every role she plays is carefully interpreted--she is, amazingly, a different person in every character she plays--unlike Luo Yu Xi and Sun Zhen Ni, who retain acting mannerisms and tricks from previous series they appeared in.

The series, unfortunately, dwindles from Episode 33 onward, as though the writers could not agree on how to give it a proper ending. There are too many gadgets and gizmos that appear out of nowhere, and the special effects featuring cataclysms eventually become boring. In the end, the story is really about the Yin and the Yang within the Self, illustrated, strangely, not as Taoist philosophy but in a dissonant, Western, Jungian manner--we get an overdose of I love you/I hate you, truth/lies, life/death--albeit providing a perfect vehicle for Luo Yun Xi, who, because of his expressive eyes, easily projects masculinity/femininity, good/evil, and an entire range of emotions.

There are continuity lapses, as can be expected from all multi-episode movies. In Episode 11 a dangling jewel from the king's crown is missing in some shots and is suddenly there in other shots. In Episode 20, Bingchang says goodbye to her husband Xiao Lin while she is looking down, but in the succeeding shot she is looking up. In Episode 25 Ye Xiwu blows on sweet porridge that has logically run cold after all those hours. In Episode 26 Ye Xiwu's purple eye due to the world-alluring jade transfers from right to left, possibly because of reverse shots. It is also quite discombobulating when a character spits blood and shows that his teeth are covered with blood, but in succeeding shots his teeth are the whitest; this first occurs in Episode 27. I still have to watch a xianxia in which tea is poured and does not spill on the table; something must be wrong with all of those spouts. The title is perplexing because the series really has nothing to do with the moon, either literally or figuratively, unless the writers are making an indirect reference to the passing of lunar years. And, as with other xianxia, the music track diverges from the Chinese and goes Indiana Jones, especially in battle scenes.

Having said all of this, I love xianxia because they demonstrate that philosophy can justify evil when theology cannot. Indeed, morality should never be based on religion but, rather, on the greatest good of all, and religion frequently has nothing to do with that.

"Without the Devil God, this world no longer needs a god."

Finished reading The Hound of Death last night--a dozen short stories by Agatha Christie, most of them supernatural and the rest deeply psychological. I never read this anthology before and I'm glad my sister Sylvia gave it to me. The closest Christie ever got to the occult in her novels were in The Pale Horse, featuring amateur detective Mark Easterbrook, who investigates murders occurring in a Tudor-style inn run by alleged witches, and in Sad Cypress, in which there are several scenes with a mysterious gypsy woman.

Ashes of Love

Watched all 63 episodes of China's Ashes of Love (2017), a xianxia set in the Heavenly, Floral, Demon, Water, and Earthly Realms. Heartbroken and on her death bed, the Floral Immortal gives birth to a baby girl and feeds her the Yun Elixir that will prevent her ever falling in love and sharing her mother's fate. When the girl grows up, however, she meets Xufeng, the Fire Immortal, and Runyu, the Water Immortal, who are half-brothers and who both fall in love with her. Events unfold to a series of royal and famiy intrigues, adventures and misadventures, and wars between realms

Like all xianxia, the sets are spectacular and massive, and the special effects flawless. Except for three or four ham actors the cast delivers superb performances, their characters maturing and evolving over 63 episodes. Due to inexpert exposition--and perhaps too much information for the viewer's mind to quickly process--the story is at first difficult to absorb, especially since it is initially set in gaudy, if not stagey, locations. Everything is gripping, however, from Episode 13 onward, and, despite minor lapses in continuity, becomes an unforgettable screening for xianxia fans. There is too much heavy drama--too many scenes on pining and yearning and fretting over love, both requited and unrequited--that the writers sought to counterbalance with too much comic relief. In all, nonetheless, this is a commendable production and will easily become a favorite to lovers of this genre.

Yang Zi gives a fine performance even if, despite her many close-ups, she has limited facial expressions. As Grape Elf she verges on caricature. She is completely overshadowed by Deng Lun and Luo Yunxi, who also overshadow everyone else in the cast. These two lead actors are perfectly orchestrated, physically and psychologically. and deserve to remain on China's silver screen through their old age.

"Good afternoon Sir Tony. I have a weird dream last night. In my dream, I was flying and could see the stars. Then, while on air, I saw a car full of people. Then a girl told me that the passengers were the souls of persons who just died in a car accident. I went back to my hotel, but instead of human guests, they were souls waiting for their guide, particularly that red car. Then, another soul reminds everyone that they can only travel to the afterlife if they have their travel cards.

"In my dream, I'm not a ghost but I can see them, and can communicate with me. But they don't bother me.

"In my waking life, I just lost a cousin yesterday, whom I grew up with. Then last week, a friend and a comrade passed away."

My reply:

Hello ______!

You went on astral travel. One way to check the authenticity of astral travel is to interact with the characters you encounter. If the characters are spirits, they will be able to see, hear, and talk with you. If they are living human beings, they will be unable to see, hear, and talk with you. They won't feel a thing even if you strike them on their shoulders.

If your royalties as a writer are not enough to regularly cover your electric bill and your monthly groceries, that is the writing on the wall.

You have to rethink your priorities.

After all, if you cannot uplift yourself and your family, neither can you uplift a nation.

Wrong: "I feel amazing."

Wrong, but better: "I feel amazed."

The second is acceptable ALTHOUGH being amazed is NOT an emotion, it is a mental state and something you cannot feel.

Won't be painting again until July 1, and so I'm on Episode 16 of Ashes of Love. Some of the characters are always eating flower cake, and I just had to ask D. to buy me a box of ube-flavored Tipas Hopia at Farmers Market. For some reason I like it better than Eng Bee Tin's.

Everyone on the compound has a lato-lato. I've seen them in all of the colors of the rainbow. The clicking sounds reset the energy in the environment. They remind me of the spinning arm movement shown in the sequel to The Exorcist, meant to drive the evil locusts away.

Your Messenger message:

"Prof. Tony, good morning. I would like to seek your advice on something --- after years of emotional abuse and numerous betrayals by my 'mother' (e.g., always siding with people who have wronged me while I took care of her and provided for her into her 60s), I have confronted them countless times and now, I finally had the courage to move away from her and the rest of the dysfunctional 'family' who have caused me to be dysfunctional myself. This has caused me to be distrustful of people and it has definitely given me a very low sense of self-worth. I have kept my distance from those who show me appreciation and affection (friends and former lovers) because I do not think I am worthy of such. I do not discount my own responsibility for my life and my decisions and so I decided to set boundaries, break away and start anew. It had gotten so bad that I got depressed over the years..lashing out at others highschool... In college and in my early years as a professional... for which I have been taking a prescribed SSRI... I see a shrink. There has been a lot of improvement, thank God.

"At the back of my mind, I think it is too painful to realize that those who should have provided me with basic emotional security treated me with such betrayal over the years...this includes directly emotionally abusing me or constantly siding with people who have abused me and those who have maligned me. This is something my 'mother' is good at. I think she enjoys it also... Since I have been critical of her over the years because of what she has done to me, she gets a real kick out of the fact that I have been taking care of her while she shows me that she does not care about how people malign me, she will still continue to entertain and befriend them all. When your child tells you how you have damaged him/her and you still act the same, I think it's clear that there is real malice, right? I told her she cannot have her cake and eat it too and I moved away. It is upsetting that when confronted about it, no admission and apology is given to me. I try to reconcile this with the thought that maybe this is something that I have to experience and learn from -- in this lifetime. How do I now process all these bad experiences so that I can move forward with my life with a good outlook and also trust people again?

"As a private reference, here is an example of the confrontation with my 'mother' that happened recently via messenger (to protect myself, I try to make sure that interactions are recorded electronically) Me: 'Sayo naman yang bahay. Hindi kasi kita mapagkakatiwalaan to have my best interest. Kahit siguro sa mga magkakaibigan, not a good friend ka sa ginagawa mo sa akin. you want your cake and eat it too. meron bang nanay na ganon?

"Thanks for giving me a way to continuously seek your inputs on random things and personal issues"

Hello ___!

You've already confronted your mother and broken off ties with your dysfunctional family. It takes balls to do that, and I congratulate you.

At this point, you cannot rush your healing It takes time.

You've learned to trust yourself because you love yourself. That is one step closer to trusting others. Yes, love is the secret ingredient.

Do not be afraid to love others. They will betray you from time to time, but that's all right as long as you never betray yourself again. .

"Good Morning, Sir Tony.

"I’ve been thinking about it lately to reach out to you about my childhood experience. This happened so many years back when my late granpa was still alive. "Malinaw pa sa aking ala-ala iyong nangyari sa akin nung bata ako. I remember being excited, listening to my lolo’s experience regarding supernaturals— about him meeting with Archangel Gabriel and other saints at our backyard, sa family house pa po namin iyon. Siguro ay nasa around 9-10 years old ako. Sobrang bigat po nung pakiramdam ko every time I still recall that dream and it happened twice. Hindi po magkasunod. After 2 years kung hindi ako nagkakamali ay napanaginipan kong muli. Naka-lock po iyong mata ko sa baliktad na krus at sobrang laki niya at namamangka po ako sa likod ng old family house namin, at tanda ko pa na may tumutulong dugo sa krus na iyon. "At bakit po kaya sa tuwing nagdadasal ako ay napapahikab po ako? * "Year 2019, nung lumuwas ako ng Maynila. I was hired in a corporate industry na naka-based po sa Cubao. I" also tried listening to some podcast, which I heard your name.

I have always been telling the Spirit Questors this:

Do not see fallen angels where there are none. In the first place, they are of such high ranking that they would not deign to be seen by you. Fallen angels do not disguise themselves as extraterrestrials, elementals, and the like. Why should they step down to a lower level when they are already content being where they are--in churches and inside religious statues, especially those being paraded and worshipped--because they like the attention they get when they are there. As such, they can even answer prayers and grant wishes as celestial beings can. They are the yin to the yang on this planet.

The only other places they are in, of course, are in persons' hearts. After all, if gods, goddesses, saints, and avatars can be in one's heart, why can't fallen angels? Isn't that easier and more convenient than lurking in the dark and disguising oneself as an elemental?

Fallen angels follow the path of least resistance due to their superior intelligence. They do not appear as images from horror movies. They are where they are most comfortable--right under your nose, in your everyday life.

Hello _______!

I retired in 2015 and it is now 2023. My life is dedicated completely to my family, writing and painting, shopping, and having fun. I do only what I like, what I enjoy most, and what is pleasurable. This definitely does not include teaching, which I consider as work.

Secondly, such sessions are very intimate and I do not conduct them on women. I think you will be better off in the hands of an older psychic of your own gender.

Good morning, Cubao!

The gnomes arrive home from the enchanted wet market.

Reverse Incarnation and Retroactive Enchantment

Before I retired in 2015, I conducted two types of therapy: reverse incarnation and retroactive enchantment. Both are forms of regression therapy and are complex procedures.

I regress a subject to a past life in order to determine the roots not only of talent but also the roots of karma. When that past life is particularly traumatic to the subject, however, I immediately transit to a process I call reverse incarnation. This is akin to lucid dreaming, in which the dreamer authors the dream, especially the ending of the dream. In this case, I guide the subject through revising certain portions of his past life in his memory.

Another technique that I taught and practiced was retroactive enchantment, in which the revision is done not in the subject's past life but in his immediate past. For example, when a man is terribly depressed because he lost someone, I regress him to that very moment when he first met that someone, and I guide him through a revision all the way to his present. When the subject awakes, it is as though he never met that someone whom he lost, at all.

Yes, experience and memory are like fabric. They can be cut, sewn together, folded, creased, shirred, smocked, pleated, corded, lined, dyed, beaded, and embroidered to one's contentment. And most especially, washed.

"Every human being has to suffer seven sorrows including birth, senility, sickness, death, being together with the despised ones, not getting what one wants, and being apart from the loved ones."

--Xufeng, Fire Immortal, in Ashes of Love

What you have become during your retirement counts more than what you made yourself during your employment.

It is the ultimate end game in life.
